TRE®

TRE® stands for Tension, Stress and Trauma Releasing Exercises. A simple, highly effective way to release stress and muscle tension with Neurogenic Tremors.

Neurogenic tremors are found in all mammals. They are an inbuilt physiological response to release stress, tension, and trauma. Similar to how we have an inbuilt response to clench and tighten, protecting ourselves from injury and trauma, we also have a way to let go and release this tension.

TRE® (Tension, Stress & Trauma Release Exercise) is an innovative series of exercises that assist the body in releasing deep muscular patterns of stress, tension and trauma. TRE® is based on the fundamental idea, backed by recent research, that stress, tension and trauma is both psychological and physical. TRE®’s reflexive muscle vibrations generally feel pleasant and soothing.  After doing TRE®, many people report feelings of peace and well-being.

TRE® emerged out of Dr. David Berceli’s work with large traumatized communities while living in Africa and the Middle East. His observation and exploration led him to understand that this natural shaking/vibrating response appears to be the body’s own built-in system for quieting down the brain and releasing muscular tension as a way of healing itself from chronic stress, tension and trauma.

David Berceli, a Licensed Massage Therapist, Certified Field Traumatologist, and Clinical Social Worker (PhD),  has discovered a way to activate natural neurogenic tremors in the body using a simple set of exercises he called TRE or Tension/Trauma Releasing Exercises.

The Exercises stress a core group of muscles, and when the muscles begin to get fatigued, they start to tremble. After the series of mild muscle stressing exercises, people who are practicing lay on their backs and hold a position that causes more shaking until the tremors will naturally remain activated for a duration that is comfortable.

Unwinding The Knots In Our Muscles & Fascia

When neurogenic tremors have been activated, the self intelligence of the whole organism starts a process of restoring balance and relaxation to the body.

The tremors are actually our muscles contracting and relaxing in order to produce different rhythms that manifest as a small vibration all the way to quivering and shaking, or even swaying or undulations of the body. These have the effect of relaxing the deep tension in our muscles, realigning our fascia and also creating better symmetry in our musculo-skeletal system. The contraction of the psoas can now be loosened up, and our posture “reassembled” as diaphragms opens too.

The tremors resolve problems that can’t be reached using massage alone.

The benefit of going through this process is that you become more pain-free and stress-proof: you increase your resiliency as well as your feelings of peace and well-being.

TRE® is innovative and liberating as it is self- taught, self-administrated and self-regulated.

What does Self-Regulation mean?

Self-regulation is the ability to tolerate and control ones emotions, thoughts, feelings, and sensations independently of external supervision or regulation. Cognitive neuroscience research suggests that successful self-regulation is dependent on top-down control from the prefrontal cortex over subcortical regions involved in survival and emotion.

Self-regulatory collapse is when the individual cannot control their own overwhelming emotions, thoughts, feelings, and sensations.

Benefits

You gain a new tool and autonomy in your pain management process, as well as unwinding built-up tensions.

Grounding, centering, self-awareness, self-regulation,autonomy, resiliency are empowering qualities of being that you will cultivate along the process.

Beyond the healing of trauma that TRE has demonstrated, many martial artists, athletes, body builders and yogic practitioners use TRE to loosen up and integrate after training.

Invite TRE® in your physical practice of change: begin a new way of being for yourself.

This technology is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease.

TRE® is a safe and effective stress release technique for most people. The TRE process should not be used as a substitute for trauma recovery procedures of a medical or psychiatric/psychological nature. Individuals who have physical or psychological conditions that require strict regulation, individuals with fragile psychological defenses, a complex history of trauma or restricting physical or medical limitations should consult their medical practitioner or a Certified TRE Provider prior to performing these exercises.
